Notebook Cover Size in India: A4, A5, B5 and Other Common Sizes

Kalabook blog cover for the guide: Notebook Cover Size in India: A4, A5, B5 and Other Common Sizes

You cannot design a notebook cover until you know its size. And it is not just one size: there is the finished size, the size with bleed and sometimes a wider size for covers that wrap around a spine.

This guide lists the standard notebook cover size in India for A4, A5, B5 and more, shows how to work out the bleed size and tells you what to confirm with your printer before you start.

The standard notebook cover size in India

Most notebooks follow international paper sizes. These are the finished (trim) sizes in millimetres:

SizeWidth x height (mm)Often used for
A3297 x 420Large sketchbooks, pads
A4210 x 297Big notebooks, project books
A5148 x 210Everyday notebooks, diaries
A6105 x 148Pocket notebooks
B5 (ISO)176 x 250Study notebooks, journals
B6 (ISO)125 x 176Compact journals

Some Indian notebooks use local sizes, such as long books and other school formats, which are not the same as A or B sizes. They vary by maker and region, so get the exact size from your product sheet or printer.

Add bleed to get the file size

The file you design is slightly larger than the finished cover, because of bleed. With 3 mm bleed on each side, add 6 mm to width and 6 mm to height:

SizeWith 3 mm bleed (mm)
A4216 x 303
A5154 x 216
A6111 x 154
B5182 x 256
B6131 x 182

Some printers ask for a different bleed. Always use the value your printer gives you. For how bleed works, see the print-ready notebook cover guide.

Safe margin

Keep titles and logos inside a safe margin, often 3 to 5 mm inside the trim line. For A5 with a 5 mm margin, the safe area is 138 x 200 mm (148 - 10 and 210 - 10).

Front only, or full wrap?

Check what your notebook needs:

  • Front cover only. The size is the trim size plus bleed.
  • Front and back as separate files. Two files, same size.
  • Full wrap (front, spine, back). One wide file. Width is the front plus the back plus the spine, plus bleed. The spine width depends on the page count and paper, so ask your printer.
  • Spiral or wire-bound. Usually separate front and back covers, with a binding edge to keep clear. See spiral notebook cover design.

How to confirm your size in four steps

  1. Ask your printer for the finished size and the full file size with bleed.
  2. Ask for the safe margin and any binding area.
  3. Measure a sample notebook if you have one.
  4. Write the sizes in your design brief. See how to brief a designer.

Common size mistakes

  • Designing at the finished size with no bleed
  • Using a size from a website instead of your printer's template
  • Forgetting that one design may need several sizes
  • Stretching an A5 design to fit B5, which changes proportions

If you plan one design for many sizes, ask for an editable file such as CDR so the artwork can be rebuilt for each size. See the notebook cover CDR file guide.

Common questions

Is B5 bigger than A5? Yes. B5 (ISO) is 176 x 250 mm and A5 is 148 x 210 mm.

What size is an A5 notebook cover with bleed? About 154 x 216 mm with 3 mm bleed on each side.

Can I use the same file for A4 and A5? Only if the layout is simple and scaled well. In most cases the artwork needs to be adjusted, not just shrunk.

Do Indian school notebooks use A sizes? Some do and some use local sizes. Confirm with the maker or printer.

Final thought

Know three sizes before you design: the finished size, the file size with bleed and the safe area. With those, the rest is easier.
